What is this deadline?

The online filing deadline for the UK Self Assessment tax return (SA100) for the 2024/25 tax year. Also the date you pay:

  • Any balancing tax owed for 2024/25
  • First payment on account for 2025/26 (50% of last year's tax estimated forward)

Who needs to file?

  • Self-employed / sole traders
  • Company directors
  • Anyone with untaxed income (rental, dividends, overseas)
  • Anyone earning over £150k PAYE

Key dates

  • Paper filing deadline: October 31, 2025 (already passed for this year)
  • Online filing: January 31, 2026
  • Payment: January 31, 2026

How to file

  • Self Assessment online via HMRC Government Gateway
  • Or commercial software (TaxCalc, GoSimpleTax, FreeAgent)
  • Or via an accountant

What people miss

  • Payment on account catches new sole traders by surprise — you pay 1.5x last year's tax in January (balancing + POA1) and another 0.5x in July
  • Marriage Allowance transfer (£1,260 personal allowance) — easy £252 tax saving if your partner earns under the PA
  • Pension contributions extend the basic rate band — higher-rate taxpayers get relief via Self Assessment
  • Trading allowance (£1,000) and property allowance (£1,000) — don't report tiny side income if under
  • Class 2 NIC was abolished April 2024 — don't include it

If you miss the deadline

  • £100 automatic late filing penalty (even if you owe nothing)
  • Additional £10/day after 3 months
  • 5% of unpaid tax at 6 months and 12 months
